Lough Shore Investments-backed film THE SHORE wins Oscar
THE SHORE, written, directed and produced by Belfast native and double Oscar-nominated screenwriter and director Terry George, last night won the Academy Award for Best Live Action Short Film at the 84th Annual Academy Awards® ceremony, held in LA. THE SHORE was among five nominees in the prestigious category.
The film, part-funded by Lough Shore Investments, was, in January, named among 5 short films that would advance for final judging by Academy Branch members. One hundred and seven pictures had originally qualified in the category.
Upon receiving the award, George thanked the people of Northern Ireland saying: "Our little film was inspired by the people of Northern Ireland, protestant and catholic, who after 30 years of war, sat down, negotiated a peace and proved to the world that the Irish are great talkers. I want to dedicate this to them."
THE SHORE, also produced in association with Northern Ireland Screen & Tourism Ireland, was shot entirely on location in Coney Island, Co. Down, and tells the story of ‘Jim Mahon’ on his return to Belfast with his daughter, ‘Patricia,’ after 25 years in exile having fled Belfast’s Troubles decades earlier.
Speaking following last night’s success, Danny Moore, Lough Shore Investments founder and executive producer of THE SHORE, said: “The Lough Shore model is to invest in world class management teams with big aspirations and a passion to succeed. When Terry George first approached us about The Shore he certainly had those big aspirations and winning that much coveted Oscar was his ultimate goal. It’s been an incredible journey and we were delighted to see him deliver that moving acceptance speech last night.
“When Terry first conveyed the powerful vision of Northern Ireland he wanted to communicate to the world, we had no hesitation in getting involved. For us, The Shore afforded a very unique means through which we could showcase Northern Ireland abroad, both as a place to do business, film or otherwise, and as a rapidly expanding tourist destination.
“It’s also not every day you get to work with a twice Oscar nominated writer and director. The Shore was Terry’s third Oscar nomination and he’s been around the industry for years. In start-up terms, he’s a serial entrepreneur with a history of success and we are delighted to be associated with his latest triumph.”
THE SHORE’s Executive Producer Stephen Morrow, also of Lough Shore Investments, added: “For Terry George, this is a crowning achievement in what is an already glittering career. Terry is one of Ireland’s finest filmmakers and this is a much deserved Oscar. The Shore is a beautifully crafted film that captures all that is great about this part of the world and we’re delighted the film has been recognised as such. We want to congratulate Terry and his team, and we look forward to him bringing that very special gold statue back to Belfast!”
Speaking on Lough Shore Investments involvement in the film, Terry George commented: “A crucial element in getting The Shore off the ground was the financial investment made by Lough Shore Investments.
“It was a brave and innovative move for a private entity to take a chance with a short film but Lough Shore was willing to take that risk. The company’s commitment allowed us to reach the budget we knew we needed to make The Shore a professional, world class film that would showcase the beauty of Northern Ireland and the warmth of its people.”
